What are EDR (Event Data Recorders)?
An EDR is a device that records and stores information related to a vehicle crash. The information can include pre-crash data like vehicle speed, braking activity, crash severity data, restraint (seat belt) usage, and sequence of events during the accident. EDR's do NOT include audio, video, GPS or other tracking data, and will only store data when there is an event sufficient to activate the airbag.
What vehicles store harvestable data?
Most GM models since 1994
Some Isuzu, Saab and Suzuki models
Many Ford/Lincoln/Mercury models since 2001
Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep models since 2004
What questions can the EDR answer?
Was the driver speeding?
Were seat belts being worn at the time of the accident?
When and if braking occurred, how hard an in what sequence?
What was the stopping distance?
What avoidance measures were taken?
What was the steering activity?
Were there multiple collisions and in what sequence did they occur?
